What follows is an excerpt from Katie’s story about obtaining an abortion for a much-wanted pregnancy. She opens up about navigating “the hardest decision of [her] life,” from learning of a terminal fetal diagnosis through undergoing the procedure and recovery. “… My pregnancy had been totally normal, and I had no family history of any problems, so we scheduled a routine anatomy scan ultrasound at the standard time — 20 weeks. That’s the big one when they check all of the baby’s organs to make sure everything is developing properly.
For some reason, the night before I suddenly felt very nervous and told my husband I was afraid they’d find something wrong. I’ve dealt with anxiety my whole life, so he tried to reassure me that it was just that. But I just couldn’t shake the feeling….”
