“…I’d initially been diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), almost a decade earlier, while I was in college. Aside from some frantic, post-appointment googling, I’d mostly ignored the disease, parsing my amenorrhea as a convenience.
I was used to my periods disappearing for months; sometimes, I’d go so long between them that my doctor would wrench one out of me with a course of progesterone pills. I’d never fully understood why, or bothered to look into it, until now….”
