My Abortion #211: Toni’s experience, 1960’s

Roar will publish a first-person story about abortion, “My Abortion: A Daily Story,” every day for at least 365 days. The below excerpt opens Toni’s story. From east Tennessee, Toni talks about her two chilling experiences obtaining abortion before the US Supreme Court legalized it nationwide in Roe v. Wade. She later speaks of training as a volunteer abortion provider to ensure other’s safety. “Nobody can tell a woman what to do with her body. She’ll find a way to do what she has to do—whether or not it’s healthy or safe.

I was fortunate; I’m still here, and I didn’t get horribly hurt. But the reality is I had two abortions that were illegal, and I don’t know to this day — will never know — if they were really doctors…”
