My Abortion #100: Mi Aborto Me Permitió Vivir Mi Vida/My Abortion Allowed Me to Live my Life

Roar will publish a first-person story about abortion, “My Abortion: A Daily Story,” every day for at least 365 days.

Today’s story comes from COLOR, Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights), “a sisterhood of Latinas dedicated to building a movement of Latinas, their families and allies through leadership development, organizing and advocacy to create opportunity and achieve reproductive justice.”

Although Sam’s boyfriend considered keeping the baby, they decided that doctors and babies were too expensive, and they didn’t have the resources to take on that responsibility.

 This is Sam’s story

In the summer of 2013, I learned I was pregnant. I was with my boyfriend of a year. We had a small apartment where we lived together. We didn’t have stable jobs and although my boyfriend considered we carry the baby to term, we decided that moment and the next nine months were not the best time to take so much responsibility and debt. Doctors and babies are expensive and we didn’t have the resources to take on that responsibility. We barely had enough money to pay for the abortion and cover our monthly expenses. Those were difficult months after the appointment with the doctor who performed the abortion. Although my partner felt pain after the abortion, we talked about the situation and have learned that the abortion was the best decision we made. Now we are in an intimate relationship, and we speak about the future with happy expectations of all we are free to do without a child. (Trans. by Lisbeth Coiman)
