Next month, Mariana Alvarado, a renowned journalist living in Mexico City, will send us her thoughts on feminism, politics, and her perspective from Mexico. We look forward to her writing. Until then, here are a few updates about President Trump’s discourse on Mexico.
- In August of 2016, CNN compiled an entire list of insults Trump hailed at Mexico.
- As we all know, more recently, Trump has escalated his call for a wall between the United States and Mexico. President Peña Nieto canceled his meeting with Trump, and not surprisingly agrees with many Americans that the wall is a bad idea. Even Republicans like John McCain suggest expecting Mexico to pay for a wall is not a viable option.
- Time Magazine reported: “‘President Donald Trump warned in a phone call with his Mexican counterpart that he was ready to send U.S. troops to stop “bad hombres down there’” unless the Mexican military does more to control them, according to an excerpt of a transcript of the conversation obtained by The Associated Press.”
- The Washington Post reported that amidst Trump’s talk of “bad hombres” he didn’t in fact threaten war. Both the United States government and the Mexican government are said to have agreed that there were no threats in this “friendly” conversation. (Perhaps we can sleep a slight bit better knowing he didn’t threaten war on Mexico.)
