Roar will publish a first-person story about abortion, “My Abortion: A Daily Story,” every day for at least 365 days.
Today’s story comes from Not Alone, an online organization that wants to change the conversation around abortion and fight back against increasing attacks on women’s rights.
Heather J was 18 when she had her first abortion. She has had five, and does not regret her choices.
I was 18 when I had my first abortion. I had quit school, and was working a really good job at a vet. Life was going well. I found out I was pregnant with my then-boyfriends’ child, and I knew it wasn’t right. I should have been more careful. I was still a kid and he was younger than I was. I made the decision to abort the pregnancy after my mother told me she had 3 before she met my father. The procedure was quick, and the people were actually quite nice. When I woke up, the cramps were horrible. I went home, took a 2-hour nap and went out that night with some friends. About two months later, I found out I was pregnant again, shocker. Abortion # 2 happened. Same experience as before, but less cramping. I have had a total of 5 now, and sometimes I do wonder “what if,” but I do not regret my choices. I made them, I wasn’t forced. It was my right. I have no plans to have children anytime soon, but I do want at least one, when I find a man who will share the responsibility, equally. Remember that it is your decision, and those people standing outside that clinic are fighting for all the wrong reasons. They aren’t going to help you raise that child, so do what you need to do.
