My Abortion #57: A’Maya
Roar will publish a first-person story about abortion, “My Abortion: A Daily Story,” every day for at least 365 days.
Today’s story comes from 1 in 3 Campaign, an organization devoted to start a conversation about abortion in our terms.
A’Maya has never regretted her abortion 19 years ago, nor the 1800 miles she had to fly to get the procedure. This is her story.
I was 20 years old. Sure, I should have known better than to have unprotected sex, but I did it anyway, and got pregnant. Not ready to have a baby, I called my mom, then flew the 1,800 miles back to where she lived, so she could go with me to get an abortion. The clinic I went to treated me with complete respect, and kindness. I will remember those women forever. And once it was done, I felt nothing but relief. That was 19 years ago, and I have never regretted my choice to have an abortion. Never.
